| Royal Huisman's latest project is on the slipway |
…and ready for launch. Last week the prestigious Dutch printers and publishers, Waanders, set their presses in a state of readiness to begin printing a new book:
Written by Stephen Chipperfield and designed by Rod Teasdale to commemorate the 125th year of the founding of the Royal Huisman Shipyard, the book runs to 232 pages with over 60,000 words of text and hundreds of photographs that include many archive pictures never previously published.
The 25cm (10 inches) square format may be seen as modest in size but, true to form, the Vollenhove team has sought to achieve the highest quality to be found in print and paper – cover to cover this remains a Huisman build.
The book relates the history of the yard, its owners, customers and the boats they built over the 125 years from 1884 to the present day, but it is not presented as a straight, sequential history. Instead, the book is structured to present different facets of the yard through different chapters that can be individually read and enjoyed. These include family history, racing yachts and their owners, adventure and exploration, technological developments, changing build materials and techniques and the world around Royal Huisman. In many ways, therefore, the book will hold up a mirror to the wider world of yacht building with much analogy to life in general.
ROYAL HUISMAN 125 YEARS – The Spirit of Individuality will be printed in English and Dutch and officially launched in Monaco on September 23rd – a date, according to the yard’s research, quite close to the day that
Jan Jans Huisman first opened his doors for business in 1884.
This limited edition book will be available for sale through www.royalhuismanmedia.com.
