What better pursuit for the successful entrepreneur. Putting the honed skills of a lifetime’s achievement into another challenging area - to buiId a yacht and go sailing.
On life's time continuum it is always intriguing how a number of factors and people come together at a point in time and create something unique. For Surama, like most other yachts, it needed the vision and determination of a committed owner. Our entrepreneur has had a phenomenal success in building a lasting business over the past fifty years but the idea of 'retirement' was always to be for tomorrow.
Already a keen sailor, Surama's owner decided to put his determination and expertise into a new spectacular yacht. Being an elder yachtsman, certain factors would have to be addressed, one of which was finding a way to have a custom yacht built to the highest quality in the shortest time.
Another crucial requirement would be safety considerations ensuring that the owner and guests could safely move around the yachts interior and deck area, confident that handrails would always be within reach. Safe embarking and disembarking would also be an important issue in the design brief.
"A young boat for an owner who will always be young at heart" - designer Andrew Winch
The owner was familiar with two yachts that had particularly caught his discerning eye, Cyclos Ill and Juliet. Both of these landmark yachts were built by the Royal Huisman shipyard which proved to be the ideal starting point for a journey into the next Surama. As a celebrated yard, Royal Huisman seemed to always have a substantial order book but the owner was in luck - a factor seemingly created by successful entrepreneurs! A Ted Hood project was underway at the yard which provided an ideal fast track solution enabling the basic design and engineering to be transferred to a new yacht, virtually removing a whole year of development work from the schedule.
A prominent yacht of high pedigree benefits from three basic ingredients. Already Surama had gained two. A design from a respected design house and a builder of the highest repute. To complete the team, Andrew Winch, with many spectacular yachts to his credit (including Cyclos Ill) joined the project.
